Post and Beam Construction Examples: Inside Our Best Pennsylvania Projects

When you drive through the Pennsylvania countryside, you’ll occasionally spot a stunning timber structure that catches your eye—perhaps a graceful barn, an elegant pergola, or a spacious pavilion hosting a summer gathering. At Premier Timber Frame Builders, we’ve spent nearly a decade creating these remarkable structures using Eastern Hemlock and traditional mortise and tenon joinery.

The Classic Pennsylvania Barn

One of our proudest post and beam construction examples is a 60×40-foot barn completed for a family in Lancaster County. The post and beam design allowed us to create an open floor plan with minimal interior columns, featuring eight heavy timber posts supporting the main roof structure, a cathedral ceiling rising 28 feet at the peak, and large sliding barn doors on both ends.

Modern Home Integration: A Custom Residence

We completed a custom home in the Poconos region that showcased how post and beam technique can transform residential spaces. Using post and beam construction, we created a 24-foot cathedral ceiling in the main living space, four substantial corner posts of Eastern Hemlock timber, and a kitchen-to-family-room layout that flows seamlessly under continuous beams.

The Showstopper Pergola

A 16×20-foot pergola we built for a Philadelphia-area estate demonstrates how post and beam principles can create stunning garden focal points. Six prominent posts support the overhead structure, with decorative beam brackets showcasing the wood grain and cross-beams positioned for dappled shade.

The Community Pavilion: Post and Beam at Scale

One of our most ambitious projects is a community pavilion measuring 30×50 feet. Ten substantial posts support the expansive roof, with heavy timber trusses creating dramatic interior sightlines and accommodating 200+ people for outdoor events.

DIY Kit Success

Some of our best post and beam examples come from customers who purchased our DIY kits. One family in Maryland built a 20×24-foot pergola over three weekends—all mortise and tenon joints properly seated, plumb and level throughout, with a genuine sense of pride and ownership.

Design Principles Across All Our Examples

Honest Materials and Joinery—we showcase the wood and joints rather than hiding them. Appropriate Proportions—beam sizes relate thoughtfully to the structure’s scale. Natural Light Integration—post and beam design allows for strategic window placement. Flexibility and Longevity—structures that can be adapted as needs change and last for generations.
